As a beauty entrepreneur, beauty is always top of mind for me. One concept I find fascinating is the idea of a “10” in different cities—what makes someone a “dime” in Los Angeles versus New York versus Miami? In L.A., a 10 is thin, possibly with a few enhancements, and exudes a natural, earthy vibe. In New York, the ideal leans toward a super-thin, dark-feminine, high-fashion aesthetic. Miami, on the other hand, favors exotic features, dark hair, and BBL-enhanced curves. Being based in Dallas, the local “10” aesthetic leans more toward skinny blondes. As a Black woman, I’ve curated my own standard of beauty, and here’s what I’m working on to become my own version of a dime.
Skin: The Foundation of Beauty
Skincare has always been a priority for me. Having founded a beauty bar specializing in skin enhancements, I take pride in my even, flawless complexion. But I’m taking it up a notch. Recently, I started using at-home injectables from a luxury medspa—antioxidant-based and anti-aging, ensuring my skin remains glowing and youthful. Though I’m not a fan of needles, I commit to these three times a week. Along with my daily facial serums and SPF, I’m incorporating collagen hand creams and rose oil foot balm for smooth hands and feet. Weekly LED light therapy masks are also part of my regimen.
Hair: A Sleek Reset
I recently took out my raw hair bundles, dyed my natural hair jet black, and added bangs for a fresh look. This chop allows my hair to grow evenly. I’ve stepped back from extensions for now, opting for sleek buns and ponytails—low-maintenance styles that allow me to apply hair growth oils regularly while still giving off the “clean girl” aesthetic. I’m also taking SuperGreens with biotin and using amla hair oil, known for its incredible hair growth benefits. In time, I’ll reintroduce extensions, but for now, my hair needs a break. As for brows, I’m considering microblading for a polished, long-lasting look.
Nails: DIY Glam
I’ve moved away from salon manicures and started experimenting with XCoatTips and GelX at home. This switch not only saves me money but also prevents excessive nail thinning from constant salon filing. Doing my own nails allows me to prioritize strengthening and growth while having fun with different colors, shapes, and lengths.
Body: Toning & Health
I’m on a journey to shed 15-20 pounds while managing my high cholesterol and PCOS. By addressing these health factors, I’m making weight loss more achievable. My fitness routine includes mat and reformer Pilates for toning, along with waist training. Maintaining a daily calorie intake of around 1,200 has been a challenge, but I’m finally getting into the groove. Supplements, hydration, and detoxing have also played a significant role in boosting my energy and mood. I aim to drink 70 ounces of water daily but am still working on increasing my intake from 40 ounces.
Teeth: The Finishing Touch
I take my teeth seriously. After clear aligners, crown lengthening, and gum surgeries, I’m finally happy with my smile. I wear my retainers religiously and deep clean them every night. My oral care routine includes daily flossing and brushing 2-3 times per day. To elevate my smile even further, I plan on getting professional teeth whitening.
Style: The Final Step
I don’t need to overhaul my wardrobe—I just need to lose a bit more weight and tone up. Once I reach my goal, I’ll tailor my clothes to perfection, achieving the polished image I have in mind.
Ultimately, this transformation isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about becoming the best version of myself—inside and out. I’m excited to continue this journey while prioritizing my health, confidence, and overall well-being.
